Fuqua and Washington are teaming up once again for a Netflix movie that doesn’t have a title yet. This film will be about the Carthaginian General Hannibal, known as one of the greatest military leaders in history, and it will reveal his real-life story.
The general is well-known for riding a war elephant into Italy while his North African forces captured and held southern parts of the country for over a decade. The Romans eventually regained the land in a counter-offensive. The film will showcase the crucial battles he commanded against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War
Washington’s usual partner, Antoine Fuqua, known for directing films like “Training Day” and “The Equalizer” series, will be directing the film. The script will be written by John Logan, a three-time Oscar nominee for “Gladiator,” “The Aviator,” and “Hugo.” Under a first-look deal with Netflix, Washington and Fuqua will not only act but also produce the movie through Fuqua’s production company, Hill District Media.
This upcoming Netflix film will mark the sixth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua. Their partnership began with “Training Day” and continued with “The Magnificent Seven,” “The Equalizer,” “The Equalizer 2,” and “The Equalizer 3.” Although the third installment was presented as the series’ conclusion, Fuqua has expressed a willingness to extend it if Washington is interested.
In addition to leading Hannibal’s armies in the period epic, Washington will also be the star of Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator sequel. The film is expected to hit theaters around late 2024.
