The latest Japanese-made Godzilla film, “Godzilla Minus One,” has garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning praise as one of the finest entries in the Godzilla franchise. Directed and written by veteran Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, the movie premiered in the United States on December 1, earning $11 million in its opening weekend against a modest $15 million budget.
“Godzilla Minus One” has soared to the top of Rotten Tomatoes’ rankings, boasting an impressive 96% approval rating from users, making it the highest-rated Godzilla film to date. Critics have lauded the film for its compelling human stories that complement the thrilling action sequences, resulting in an engaging cinematic experience.
This achievement places “Godzilla Minus One” above the original 1950s Godzilla film, which holds the second spot with a 93% rating, and “Shin Godzilla” from 2016, ranking third with an 86% rating. With its financial and critical success, there are indications that the film may enjoy an extended theatrical run in the United States.
Set in the post-World War II recovery period in Japan, “Godzilla Minus One” explores the origins of the iconic kaiju, with a talented cast including Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, and others.
