Marvel Studios has taken a step back this year with the film releases, with Deadpool 3 being the only release for them, but what is a year without Marvel releases? Sony has decided to take full reign this year with three releases, and Madame Web is the first of these releases, with Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3 coming later.
Madame Web follows Cassandra Web, a paramedic in New York City, who must confront her past when she begins to show signs of being a clairvoyant. Cassandra comes across three young girls who are all tied to each other and are being hunted by Ezekiel Sims, a man with connections to Cassandra Web’s past.
Let’s get my biggest problem with the film off my chest. This adaptation of Cassandra Web is a very poor attempt and an even worse attempt than Morbius. The difference between Morbius and Cassandra Web is that they managed to keep Morbius’ disability, which was important to the story being told.
Cassandra Web in the comics is known for her blindness and is also paralysed, which is caused by Myasthenia gravis. In Madame Web, Cassandra Web is free of both of these, and it’s actually explained at the end of the second act why she is healthy.
I want to keep this spoiler-free, so unfortunately I can’t go into detail, but with how the film ends off her character arc, it’s honestly disrespectful to not only her character but people affected by this who could possibly see themselves in her.
