In the years since its release, the film has become a cult classic.

As per Variety, Repo Man will now be getting a sequel. Titled Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, the sequel will be directed by original Repo Man director Alex Cox. The film is set to star actor Kiowa Gordon, taking over for Emilio Estevez. The filmmakers explain their hopes for Repo Man 2 below:

“[We wish to] deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling, navigating the absurd and chaotic world of repo men into a new age of nuclear brinkmanship and driverless cars.”

Why Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer Will Be Difficult To Make

Repo Man Is Now Considered An Iconic 1980s Movie

It has been four decades since the original release of Repo Man, making this sequel come as a big surprise. Repo Man had trouble at the box office upon its initial release but received widespread acclaim at the time. In the forty years since its release, Repo Man has become even more beloved, and now maintains its status as a cult classic and is widely considered one of the best films to come out of the 1980s.

Losing its memorable cast members could be hard for Repo Man 2 , as it attempts to reinvent itself for the new generation.

Repo Man’s cast is part of what gave it the iconic status that it holds. Estevez played the lead role, with beloved character actor Harry Dean Stanton taking a supporting role. Stanton passed away in 2017, making his participation in the sequel impossible, and Estevez is not starring in the film, at least according to this initial report. Losing its memorable cast members could be hard for Repo Man 2 as it attempts to reinvent itself for the new generation.

1980s movies tend to be seen collectively and grouped together more than other decades. The quintessential 80s movies all share a common style.

The clout of Repo Man and its cast will give Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer a tough act to follow. The fact that Cox is at the wheel again, however, makes the sequel more promising. There have been attempts at Repo Man sequels in the past, though none have made it to the screen.

Repo Man Sequel Year Announced Status
Waldo’s Hawaiian Holiday 1997 Adapted into a graphic novel by Chris Bones, published in 2008
Repo Chick 2008 Filmed in 2008 and received a limited release in 2009, but was termed a “non sequel”
Repo Man 2: The Wages Of Beer 2024 Currently in development

Hopefully, the director can find some continuity with his original vision for the ’80s movie as Repo Man 2 attempts a narrative full of “unconventional storytelling” and “existential comedy.”
