Production on the sequel initially kicked off in mid-2023, as confirmed by producer Todd Garner on June 22. “Off we go!” he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The first film arrived in 2021 after years of troubled development. But with a vision now in place and an established narrative to follow, the sequel shouldn’t take anywhere near as long to make. Early estimates even had Mortal Kombat 2 pegged for a 2024 release date.
That said, these estimates were thrown off by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which delayed several projects (including Mortal Kombat 2) before they were resolved.
Initial post-strike reports suggested that production on the sequel would resume in early 2024. However, social media posts by Garner and star Karl Urban since confirmed filming was indeed underway again in late 2023.

Mortal Kombat 2 plot
There is currently no official plot synopsis for Mortal Kombat 2. But considering where the first film left off, we can guess where the sequel is headed.
For starters, it seems inevitable a proper tournament – akin to those featured in the Mortal Kombat video games – is drawing close. After all, Cole Young’s main task at the conclusion of the first installment was to track down other fighters to get said tournament underway.
Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage will be among Cole’s recruits, based on Mortal Kombat’s post-credits scene. Indeed, the sequel’s plot could revolve around Cole’s search for Cage. Another candidate for Cole’s posse is Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana, who’s also confirmed to wield her signature bladed fans.

Will Cole, Johnny, Kitana, and the other Earthrealm heroes go head-to-head with franchise big bad himself, Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat 2? Don’t rule it out. Not only is Martyn Ford onboard as Outworld’s tyrannical ruler, but his infamous “Wrath Hammer” will definitely show up, too.
There’s also speculation that Mortal Kombat 2 will take place at least partly in the franchise’s answer to Hell, Netherrealm. This buzz is based on a set photo shared by producer Todd Garner of a red-lit stone floor. While Garner’s snap doesn’t include any context, its terrain and hue have fans convinced it depicts a Netherrealm location.
